Rhea’s story: Overcoming injury through specialist rehabilitation

Self-employed rider Rhea Macleod, who competes up to Intermediate/3*, suffered a serious accident while cross-country schooling in September 2023.

The fall resulted in severe injuries, including breaks to both wrists and her right clavicle, all of which required surgery. That meant that Rhea faced significant challenges in her recovery, including limited mobility and difficulties in daily tasks. Unable to use her phone or manage her rehab process alone, a friend reached out to Jane Rudd from the team here at the British Eventing Support Trust on her behalf.

Our team immediately stepped in, arranging for Rhea to begin physiotherapy at the Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) in Newmarket as soon as she was able. The structured and intensive rehabilitation she received at IJF, including weekly physio sessions and a tailored gym program, far exceeded the limited NHS support she was initially offered.

Thanks to the timely intervention and support from British Eventing Support Trust, Rhea’s recovery progressed faster than she had hoped. She credits the charity with giving her the best possible start to her rehab journey and ensuring she could focus on regaining strength. She remains incredibly grateful for the availability of such a crucial support system for riders of all levels.

“We are so unbelievably lucky to have a charity like the British Eventing Support Trust who support riders of all abilities, whether or not your injury was sustained at a BE event.”
