Louisa’s story: Rebuilding strength after a fractured tibial plateau

International event rider Louisa Lockwood suffered a serious injury while out hacking when another horse kicked her, fracturing her tibial plateau. Louisa was unable to bear weight for six weeks, followed by another six weeks of dedicated physiotherapy and rehab to regain mobility. Without financial support, she worried about being unable to afford the level of treatment required to recover fully. She also faced the challenge of ensuring she didn’t develop long-term movement issues because of the injury.

The British Eventing Support Trust stepped in to fund Louisa’s physiotherapy sessions, allowing her to receive the consistent, high-quality care she needed. The expert physio support not only accelerated her recovery but also helped her rebuild strength and flexibility while preventing bad postural habits that could have led to long-term issues.

When we last spoke to her, Louisa’s rehabilitation was ongoing, but thanks to our team’s support and the physio she has received, she had made significant progress in her recovery. She is optimistic about her continued improvement and grateful for the financial and emotional support that has enabled her to focus fully on healing.

“I don’t think I appreciated the seriousness of the injury, but I’m lucky it’s healing without complications.”
