We support BE competing members if they are injured training or competing – even if they aren’t in the saddle. Self-employed professional rider Harry Horgan, competing up to 4*, suffered a serious injury in June 2023 while working a horse on the ground.
The horse he was long reining suddenly bolted and sent Harry flying – before he landed on the ground immediately aware of a problem. An X-ray confirmed a severe elbow joint break with displacement, requiring emergency surgery to wire the joint back together. Surgeons warned that he would be lucky to regain full movement and that returning to riding could take up to 12 months.
Determined to challenge the prognosis, Harry sought a second opinion and encouraged by his consultant, reached out to the British Eventing Support Trust. We provided financial assistance for intensive physiotherapy, significantly accelerating his recovery. Thanks to this structured rehabilitation, Harry was back in the saddle within two months and competing again in less than three.
Even after undergoing additional surgery to remove the wires from his elbow, we continued to support his recovery, ensuring he had the resources needed to regain full strength.
Harry’s determination and the expert rehabilitation funded by the British Eventing Support Trust allowed him to make a remarkable comeback. Since recovering, he has resumed breaking in and producing young horses and even had the opportunity to represent Ireland at the FEI WBFSH World Breeding Eventing Championships for Young Horses in Le Lion D’Angers.
“I am so grateful to the BE Support Trust for taking the worry out of being able to fund all the physio and getting me back up and running in no time at all.”
