Emma’s story: From devastating injury to victory

British event rider Emma Carmichael, who competes internationally up to four-star level, suffered a catastrophic accident in December 2022. Days of freezing weather meant she boxed her horses for training sessions on the beach. But a very routine canter turned into a life-changing moment when her horse flipped over, leaving her with a pelvis broken in six places and a severe spinal injury.

Emma spent 10 days in hospital, where she underwent surgery to stabilise her pelvis and relieve pressure on her spine. Despite her determination, the road to recovery was daunting. As a self-employed rider managing a busy yard, she faced not only physical but also financial and professional challenges.

Thankfully, Emma’s mother reached out to the British Eventing Support Trust immediately after the accident. Our team was able to support Emma during her hospital stay and arranged rehabilitation at the Injured Jockey Fund’s Jack Berry House in Malton. The expert team there designed a targeted rehab plan to help Emma regain strength and stability.

Emma’s determination, combined with the support of both the British Eventing Support Trust and IJF, led to an incredible comeback. Just five months after her accident, she returned to competition at Floors Castle. Emma not only defied expectations to compete that season at all, but she went on to win the Burghley Young Event Horse qualifier and top the intermediate section on Leo Santos.

“The support from British Eventing Support Trust changed my recovery completely. Without them, I don’t think I’d be where I am today.”
