Grassroots eventer Alison Glover’s life took a sudden and traumatic turn on the 15th of October 2023, when she was unexpectedly kicked in the face while checking her horses in the field. Luckily her partner was present to call an ambulance that rushed her to hospital, but the accident resulted in severe facial injuries that would leave lasting physical and emotional marks on Alison.
Alison was immediately taken to hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery. Her injuries included a broken nose, a fractured left eye socket and a split in the middle of her left eye, which she sadly lost the sight in. While coming to terms with the severity of her injuries, she struggled with the lack of clear medical guidance and was left feeling lost and uncertain about her future.
Through the British Eventing Support Trust and Sporting Chance, Alison was connected to a counsellor who provided crucial emotional support during her recovery. The guidance she received helped her process the trauma and anger she felt and find a way forward. In addition, she was introduced to another rider who had been through a similar experience, offering invaluable peer support.
Since her injury Alison has made incredible progress. Despite the challenges, she has returned to her normal activities and is looking ahead to winter training with her horses. She credits the support from our team and Sporting Chance for helping her navigate one of the most difficult periods of her life and regain confidence.
“Without the British Eventing Support Trust and the network, I found through them, I believe I would still be feeling lost and angry. Instead, I’m back doing everything I did before and looking forward to the next eventing season.”
